Protonvpn was born in Switzerland in 2014 when a team of scientists who met at CERN (the European Organisation for Nuclear Research) decided to build a better internet where privacy is the default. Ever since it was created at CERN in 1991, the World Wide Web has revolutionised our lives. However, for many of us, the only way to benefit from the internet today is to hand over vast amounts of personal data to companies prioritising profits over privacy.

In many parts of the world, governments abuse this data to limit the freedom of their citizens.Proton was born out of a desire to build an internet that puts people before profits, where everyone is in control of their digital lives and where online freedom is a reality.
